Moron in Bear Costume Harasses Mom Bear and Cubs in Alaska
Mark Sogge with the Alaska Department of Fish & Game in Haines says their Chilkoot Lake weir technician witnessed and wrote a report about the incident.
Authorities want to talk to a man who donned a fairly realistic bear costume – head and all – and wore it when harassing a mother bear and two cubs trying to feed on pink salmon in an Alaska river. It wasn’t immediately known what the man was trying to accomplish.
As the individual approached the cubs, Koch said, the technician became concerned that the mother bear could feel her young were threatened and might attack, so he yelled at the animals to get them to move away.
An Alaska man sporting a bear costume found the bare necessities of life in all the wrong places – while frolicking alongside real bears.
The man began to jump up and down and then got close to the cubs, within five to 10 feet, Sogge says.
“Our profession would be to calculate fish”, Sogge said. No word yet on whether the costumed man was a black bear or a grizzly, but he may face wildlife harassment charges.
The still-costumed suspect then drove off in a vehicle without identifying himself or taking off his mask. “You figure it out”, he said before driving off.
The license plate number was soon reported to troopers who are now investigating the incident, said spokeswoman Megan Peters.
That episode was filmed during the forest fair in Girdwood and broadcasted on the “Alaska State Troopers” reality TV show.
