Mosque Fire In Morden Tackled By Eight Fire Engines
A fire has broken out at a mosque in south London.
More than 70 firefighters and ten engines are battling the blaze in Morden, south London.
A London Ambulance Service spokesman said a man was taken to hospital suffering the effects of smoke inhalation.
He said about 50% of the building’s ground floor was alight and the first floor was also on fire.
Police closed part of London Road and adivsed motorists to avoid the area.
It was completed in 2003 at a cost of approximately £15m.
Up to 10,000 people can fit inside the mosque but it is not known how many were in the building at the time. “Closed for foreseeable future #RoadClosure”.
The London Fire Brigade said it was called at 12.06pm and it had 70 firefighters at the scene.
Merton councillor Martin Whelton said: “Hope everyone is okay at Morden Mosque and that @LondonFire have it under control”.

He added: “Crews from New Malden, Wandsworth, Tooting, Sutton, Mitcham and Norbury fire stations are attending the incident”.
“It started at around 11.30am and the fire service are trying to establish the cause”.
