Mosquito trap tests positive for West Nile
Statewide, more than 100 positive mosquito samples have been collected in 24 counties so far this year, according to the state West Nile Virus Control Program website, west.nile.state.pa.us. The first case was reported July 1 and officials say that Winsor County resident got sick in mid-June.
Will was one of 64 IL counties to report some sort of West Nile virus activity previous year.
West Nile Virus season is underway in Hamilton.
To date in 2016, West Nile virus has been detected in mosquitoes and birds in 30 California counties.
“It is important for people across the state, particularly those in the Windsor County area, to take the appropriate steps now to prevent mosquito bites”. The elderly, young and those with compromised immune systems are most susceptible. DEP scientists also confirmed cases in Allegheny, Fayette, Lebanon, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties. In 2015, a total of 783 people caught the virus and 53 people died. If an animal is suspected of having WNV or EEE, owners are required to report to DAR, Division of Animal Health by calling 617-626-1795 and to the Department of Public Health (DPH) by calling 617-983-6800.
Eliminate all sources of standing water where mosquitoes can breed, including water in bird baths, ponds, flowerpots, wading pools, old tires and any other receptacles.
It’s also asking the public to drain standing water where mosquitoes reproduce, use insect repellent and wear light-colored, loose clothing while outdoors, particularly during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active. The best defense against Culex pipiens is to refresh any water holding container or tank every three to four days. He said there are 45 different species of mosquitoes in Vermont, all with specified habitats. More serious illnesses can result in meningitis, encephalitis or death.
