Most Heartbreaking Disney Pixar Movie?
It makes no sense – except that this is a Pixar film – to have the human sporting a diaper made of leaves.
Pixar’s last release, June’s Inside Out,earned rave reviews for essentially being the most Pixar movie that ever had been. Even though not all of Pixar’s movies have been great they are usually a film that the whole family can enjoy. Thus, it’s nearly dictated that the characters of “The Good Dinosaur” will appeal to an audience’s humanity, be it through the sweetness of Arlo and Spot’s growing (evolving?) bond, or Butch’s stern wisdom, or the unconditional love of Arlo’s mother (Frances McDormand). Now we all know that dinosaurs never shared the earth with humans, but this is explained in the opening seconds of this film when the asteroid some believe caused the extinction of the dinosaurs is shown going safely past earth.
And if the mammals were larger than rodents, dinosaurs would have wiped them out, he said. This is where the movie begins and truly develops from here. Arlo realizes he is a coward and is unsure how to overcome his crippling fear of most things around him.
Arlo’s siblings, Libby and Buck, are the more favored ones because they have built their name in the family farm, while the little dino protagonist portrays a weak and underdog role. Spot is voiced by Jack Bright, who’s wicked good at grunting and howling but never actually speaks a word.
When an accident leaves Arlo miles from his home, he must find a bravery that he’s been lacking. There are a lot of gags and jokes in here, including a scene where Arlo and Spot hallucinate due to the effects of eating fermented fruits. Watching Arlo and Spot make their way through dense forests, over sparse plains, up craggy mountains, and across rushing rivers, is, with each frame, stunning to look at. Along the way, he meets a “critter”, a human boy named Spot, and the two team up and work together to make the trek back home. The animation and voice acting is incredible. But while the movie gets dark at times, Ochoa says even the littlest viewers can handle heavy storylines.
“They’re using their massive size and power for slightly gruff and robust but loving and kind purposes”. This writer enjoyed every minute they were on screen and personally wished it didn’t have to end.
At first I was reminded of A Bug’s Life, the story of a young guy being thrust out into the wild and not being able to handle the real world. Animation studios have been reluctant to approach photorealistic settings in the past, but after seeing “The Good Dinosaur”, I’m betting hyper-realism in animation will be the next big thing. There are some elements that have been used in some past movies that long term Disney fans will find familiar.
This is sure to delight especially kids, but also adults.
