Most popular baby names of 2014: Oliver and Amelia still top
The list, compiled by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), “presents the 100 most popular first names for male and female babies born in England and Wales in 2014 and compares the rankings with those in 2004 and 2013”.
Idina Menzel’s depiction of main character Elsa has taken baby namers by storm, and the name is now in the top 100 girls’ names in Wales, up 119 places on previous year.
Pop-culture references also dominate decision making, with the names of Game Of Thrones characters continuing to be popular.
The two names came out top in seven out of 10 regions – including the West Midlands – with Jack the most popular boys’ name in the North East, Muhammed in London and Olivia the most popular girls’ name in the South East.
For girls, there were six new entries in the top ton.
Some 53 parents chose “Khaleesi” for their newly born daughters and 244 babies were named Arya as house Stark gained popularity.
Ms Freegard said: “Out with the new, in with the old”.
Notable additions to the top 100 Welsh boy’s names include Cody, Macsen, Ifan, Louis, Cole and Elliot.
