Mother, 23, shot dead by police during raid. Son, 5, injured
On Aug. 1st, Baltimore County police fatally shot Korryn Gaines, 23, as they tried to serve her with arrest warrants and she reportedly threatened them with a gun. Documents released by Baltimore County police say Gaines told officers then they would have to “murder” her to get her out of the vehicle. He was taken to Johns Hopkins Children’s Center for treatment.
“The male suspect ran from the apartment with a one-year-old boy – one of two children in the apartment with the couple – and was apprehended by police”.
According to Maryland court records, Gaines was stopped earlier this year by the police and charged with several traffic violations and resisting/interfering with arrest and disturbing the peace, all of which are misdemeanors. Courtney was wanted for an assault charge against Gaines.
It remains unclear if the boy’s injuries resulted from Gaines or the police.
Upon arrival to the home, police say three officers knocked on the door of the residence but no one answered.
“The armed woman remained inside with the five-year-old boy, and a barricade situation began at about 9.40am and continued throughout the afternoon”.
An officer reportedly then fired at Gaines, who also allegedly returned fire with her own gun.
In a statement, authorities said none of the officers involved were wearing body cameras since a program to outfit the department is only a month old.
The Independent reported that Gaines had posted videos of the standoff on social media that were later deleted.
That’s when one of the officers opened fire and the woman fired back twice, Johnson said.
Police do not know if the round the child was struck with was sacked by officers or Gaines. At that time, Gaines said she would kill the police if they didn’t leave.
“We are of course extremely upset at an event like this”, Armacost said at press conference.
A medical expert who evaluated Gaines wrote that she “had a history of problems with anger and impulsive behavior”, and visited her school counselor on several occasions. That’s when, according to police, an officer saw a woman matching Gaines’ description sitting on the floor and pointing a long gun at him. Multiple videos showing Gaines’ encounter with the police also went viral.
Gaines’ relative, Andre Brady, told WBAL, “It was a bad situation to have the little boy in the house with her, her son, who is at the hospital”, adding, “But he’s OK”.
With Gaines now deceased and the officers in question on administrative leave, there is speculation circulating without much resolution.
“My niece is a good person; I never knew her to be a rowdy person”, he said. It is still unknown whether the officers involved in the shootout were equipped with cameras or if there is video of what happened, according to CNN.
