Mother charged with murder in newborn’s death
THE woman was arrested on Tuesday on murder and manslaughter charges, police said. A source said she had “minimal contact with families” during her stay with the child welfare program.
The child – tragically referred to in court documents as “Jane Doe” – had been tossed by Berry only minutes after she was born, prosecutors and police said.
The baby was found Tuesday, unresponsive and unconscious in an alleyway outside the apartment building.
Johnson, who had been in a relationship with Berry for around a year and a half, said that he had been under the impression she’d had an abortion.
“I get frustrated with my son a lot”, she told the newspaper, but “doing harm to him never crossed my mind”.
An attorney for Berry, who is from Yonkers, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
In Monday’s death, the city medical examiner’s office determined that the girl was alive when she was dropped from the window and ruled the death a homicide.
Giovanni Johnson, owner of the apartment and father to the deceased infant, told authorities he was unaware that his girlfriend Berry was pregnant.
The wife of the building’s superintendent said she found the body of the child in the courtyard of the building. ‘I didn’t know any of this. Witness Sammy Batista said, “The baby looked like it was new, it was on the floor covered in blood”.
The Westchester County district attorney’s office said Wednesday that authorities have reopened the investigation into the 2008 death of Jennifer Berry’s child.
Jennifer was remanded without bail and will appear in court October 5. She had been in training for the first three months and it is not known why she left that position.
