Mother Teresa to be made Catholic saint in September
She died at the age of 87 in Kolkata in 1997.
Kolkata: Mother Teresa, the Nobel Laureate who spent 45 years serving the poor and sick on the streets of estern Indian city of Kolkata, will be made a Saint of Roman Catholic Church after Pope Francis recognised a second medical miracle of the late nun to clear the decks for her elevation.
Kolkata: The second miracle recognized by Pope Francis on December 17, which led to the promulgation of the decree, has been attributed to the intercession of Mother Teresa that healed a man in Brazil in 2008.
“We will incorporate more number of films since the numbers of documentaries and movies made on her has gone up over the years”, Lucas said, adding talks and seminars by experts on Mother Teresa will be important highlights of the fest.
Emerging saint… Pope Francis has signed off on the miracle needed to make Mother Teresa a saint, giving the nun who cared for the poorest of the poor one of the Church’s highest honours.
Mother Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu on August 26, 1910, in Skopje, Macedonia.
The order eventually expanded into a network of thousands of nuns who run hundreds of orphanages, soup kitchens, mobile clinics, homeless shelters and hospices in more than 130 countries around the world. “We feel deeply inspired by her and her example will accompany us throughout this Jubilee”, D’Souza said.
In order to recognize a saint, the Vatican must verify that a person has performed two miracles and has lived a virtuous life.
Apparently, according to the testimonies given, those close to the patient prayed much to Mother Teresa, to which the patient’s wife was especially devoted.
Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.
Beatification requires one miracle and is the last step before sainthood, which requires a second.
In that case, a 30-year-old woman from Kolkata, India (formerly Calcutta) said she was cured of a stomach tumor after praying to Mother Teresa.
They left suddenly 18 months later, with a BBC documentary in 2011 hearing conflicting claims about whether they left of their own free will or came under pressure from the Church.
The date for the canonization ceremony has not been officially stated, but CNS said Archbishop Rino Fisichella, president of the Vatican office that organizes the Holy Year of Mercy events, declared it would be September 4, 2016.
She joined the Loreto order of nuns in 1928 and in 1946, while traveling by train from Calcutta to Darjeeling, was inspired to found the Missionaries of Charity order.
But Mother Teresa taught all are valuable in God’s eyes and St. Katharine’s is inviting visitors to share in the joy her future sainthood at Christmas and Christmas Eve services.
