Mother Teresa Will Be Recognized As A Saint By Pope Francis
“The Holy Father has authorised the Congregation for the Causes of Saints to proclaim the decree concerning the miracle attributed to the intercession of blessed Mother Teresa”, it said in a statement.
The approval of this second miracle attributed to her was the final step required for Mother Teresa to be declared a saint, following her beatification in 2003 after the approval of her first miracle.
The miracle needed for her canonization concerns the inexplicable cure in 2008 of a man in Brazil with multiple brain abscesses who, within a day of being in a coma, was cured, according to a report in Avvenire, the newspaper of the Italian bishops’ conference.
Relatives prayed to Mother Teresa and he recovered, leaving his doctors mystified, they said.
“Mother Teresa was saint of mercy and compassion who fully lived every moment of her life”.
Mother Teresa, an ethnic Albanian, was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in 1910 in Skopje, which is now the capital of Macedonia but at the time was part of the Ottoman Empire.
Her Missionaries of Charity helped the poor on the streets of the city, now known as Kolkata, and won her the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. “We were waiting for this moment, since many years really, and now that it has come we are very happy, overjoyed”, Thomas D’Souza, archbishop of Kolkata, told Vatican Radio. When the surgeon returned to the operating room he is sais to have found the patient awake, sitting up and asking “what am I doing here?” “We will incorporate more number of films since the numbers of documentaries and movies made on her has gone up over the years”, Lucas said, adding talks and seminars by experts on Mother Teresa will be important highlights of the fest.
The traditional Roman Catholic canonization procedure requires at least two so-called medical miracles.
After Mother Teresa, Sister Nirmala took over the mantle.
Francis, whose papacy has been dedicated to ministering to the poor just as Mother Teresa did, is a known fan. In 2002, the Vatican officially recognised a miracle she was said to have carried out after her death, namely the 1998 healing of a Bengali tribal woman, Monika Besra, who was suffering from an abdominal tumour. Damian said members of his parish always knew in their hearts that Mother Teresa was a saint. “Having her become a saint is a gift for Calcutta, for the Church, and for all India”, he said.
Today, the religious order operates in 133 countries and runs hospices and homes for people with AIDS, leprosy, and tuberculosis, besides soup kitchens, mobile clinics, orphanages, and schools.
