Mother ‘tossed newborn from seventh floor window’
An autopsy determined the infant’s death was a homicide caused by multiple blunt-force trauma, chief medical examiner Dr. Barbara Sampson said Tuesday.
While initial reports could not rule what really happened, Berry was arrested on charges of second-degree murder and manslaughter in the baby’s death.
Martinez said the father is her close friend and said the man and the baby’s mother also have a 3-year-old son together.
Berry, who lives in Yonkers, initially denied to police that she was pregnant before saying she had given birth in the shower, authorities said. The infant’s umbilical cord was still attached. She was awaiting arraignment on Tuesday evening and couldn’t be reached for comment. The police are speculating from where the body lay, and the enormous amount of blood splattered everywhere, that the newborn was simply dropped out the window. EMS pronounced the infant dead soon after.
It was not immediately clear if the baby was thrown or fell from a window, the roof, or another vantage point.
Officials said it was unclear how much time elapsed between the baby’s birth and her fall from the window. They believe she then threw the baby from the window into the apartment building’s courtyard.
The city’s children services department had now launched a probe to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic death, NBC News reported.
