MotoGP 2016: New lap record and pole for Lorenzo at Misano
The gap between the top two was cut as Pedrosa stormed towards the Yamaha, putting in a new lap record before completing a fearless pass at Turn 4 for the lead. After the first lap there was just 0.202s between them and only a lap later the Doctor leaped past Lorenzo in turn 14, reversing the order. Especially Dani had a better pace and Rossi had one tenth on some laps.
Meanwhile the story of the day in the 30-minute race was the championship battle between Team Pelfrey teammates Aaron Telitz and Pato O’Ward, with a collision between the two on the first lap drastically altering the battle.
“Because already I had this lap time I wanted to risk a little bit to improve”.
He followed that with the fastest lap of the race, a 1m32.979s the next time around on lap 15, and moved past Lorenzo with an identical move on lap 17. Try to look, another time, at the overtake on the television.
However, the Honda rider’s remarkable move allowed him to become the eighth different MotoGP rider in a row to win this season joining the likes of Rossi, Lorenzo, Marquez, Cal Crutchlow, Andrea Iannone, Jack Miller and Maverick Vinales. I knew he was going to respond, so I made a decision to keep the concentration and trying to go away. We are confident to continue this trend at the next round in two weeks’ time in Aragón, which is also sponsored by the team’s title sponsor, Movistar.
Soft front tyre: “I had used this option only in the morning practices when the temperature was lower, not in the afternoon, so it was a bit of a gamble but I chose to trust my feeling”. Bastianini led at the start of the last lap, but Binder put in a scorcher to take back the lead with just a couple of corners to go. It’s good that I got the top satellite position but it wasn’t in the way that I would have wished to score it after the weekend I have had. I stopped losing terrain and I started to gain. I had some strong points on track and used them. “Now I have to wait for next time”. The whole weekend, apart from today, has been encouraging and I got a better understanding of the YZR-M1 with every lap. What do I have to say with Marquez [after their battle] in Silverstone.
“I can not be happy, I expected to fight for the win”. In occasion of the test in Brno we did a small change in the set up that for me was a small step forward. “Yet, first of all, I have to concentrate now on my own championship targets in WSBK with next week’s race in Lausitzring and I am very confident that the experience gained in MotoGP will enable me to fight for the podium”.
