Mountain lion perched on power pole captured in rare photo
Victorville Daily Press staff photographer Peter Day snapped this incredible photo of the mountain lion perched on a power pole and it quickly went viral.
According to Victorville Daily Press, the cougar scaled the 35-foot pole in a rural section of Lucerne Valley after being startled by rowdy kids who were headed home on a school bus.
Mountain lion sightings are becoming an increasingly common occurrence in populated areas of Southern California, but none of them have been quite like this.
Taking a perch above the streets was an odd occurrence for this type of cat.
While stealing the preferred hangout of neighborhood birds, the large cat was taunted by several ravens, residents said.
Andrew Hughan, a spokesman for California Department of Fish and Wildlife, said he and other officials are unsure what motivated the mountain lion to ascend the pole. He not only had people gawking at him from below, but he was also reprimanded from above.
The official said the cougar could have been chased up the pole by another mountain lion after entering its territory.
The mountain lion is believed to live in the Magic Jungle Wildlife Preserve in Lucerne Valley. “It was like the one crow was saying, ‘Hey, you’re not a crow'”.
Residents shared pictures of the mountain lion on social media.
