Mourinho accuses Wenger of snubbing his handshake post Community Shield tie
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored the only goal of the game for the Gunners, with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger ending a 13-game run without victory over Blues boss Jose Mourinho in the process.
Mourinho said: “I was doing what the status of my club and my status as a manager [demands]”. But obviously in such a short squad like we have, then when somebody is missing I am not happy.
Terry looked particularly frustrated while Arsenal celebrated with the trophy, and the Stamford Bridge skipper has challenged his team-mates to use their disappointment as a source of motivation for the season ahead – starting with Saturday’s clash with Swansea City.
“In the end history plays a part and investment plays a part”, he said.
Wenger, who confirmed that Danny Welbeck (knee) will not be fit for the showdown at Wembley, also refuted suggestions that Southampton had enquired about taking defender Chambers back on loan following his switch to the Emirates Stadium last July.
And after Arsenal’s win on Sunday, Mourinho shook hands with the Arsenal players after they had collected the shield but missed Wenger when the Frenchman walked behind him.
Chelsea, who lost Sunday’s Community Shield to the Gunners, host Fiorentina tonight in their final pre-season match. They do mean something, but win or lose, I don’t think you can say that [it will affect the league]. With that in mind, it’s maybe the boost we needed and we go again for the season.
Mourinho first arrived at the London club in 2004, winning the Premier League in his first two seasons, only to fall out with the Russian and leave in September 2007.
Wenger and Mourinho square-up to each other last season “I was last season without one single incident with the fourth official and I agree with behaviour being respectable in the technical area. Apart from that, I don’t think they had too many chances”.
“Certainly, the way my team behaved during some periods in the game, it helped, it was important for them to get that hurdle out of the way”.
