Mourinho dedicates Community Shield win to Louis Van Gaal
Jose Mourinho has warned Manchester United’s rivals that Zlatan Ibrahimovic will only get more risky after the striker headed home the victor in Sunday’s Community Shield victory over Leicester.
Jesse Lingard, who scored the final goal of the Louis van Gaal era with the victor in the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace, had put United ahead before half-time.
“I want to dedicate the victory to Louis van Gaal because without him we would not be here celebrating”, said Mourinho. That’s what it is all about – it is the 31st trophy I’ve won. Leicester included? No, we don’t ask from ourselves to win the Premier League again, not at all.
Jesse Lingard scored the opening goal of the game for the FA Cup winners before Jamie Vardy equalised for Leicester City.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s late header consigned Leicester to defeat at Wembley, though Ranieri was unperturbed. However, just recently he admitted that his players would take time to shake off the mould and playing style of Louis van Gaal’s tenure.
With a trophy on the line, both teams started with their strongest possible line ups. “We are a team and they understand that”.
“My ambition is a stupid ambition”, Mourinho added. “I would not be ambitious if I said we had a fantastic performance, because it was not a fantastic performance”, he declared. It was a tactical decision done in the final minute of a game he was trying to win.
“My individual performances will come”, he said to MUTV. “I restart with the same philosophy, the same humility; 40 points, then we start to think how far until the end of the season, and we see”.
“They brought an intensity to the game which was hard for us to cope with”, he added. “I could not take (Marouane) Fellaini or Ibra off, they were important for the Rory Delap throw-ins and we wanted to win the game”.
