Mourinho’s Comments After Chelsea’s Loss to Liverpool
Chelsea’s slump in form under Jose Mourinho reached a new low on Saturday after a 3-1 loss at home to Liverpool, while Arsenal and Manchester City continued to set the pace at the summit of the Premier League.
“There are things that are out of our hands”, Mourinho said. You are not just here to interview me.
Portsmouth’s 2-1 defeat to Notts County unfortunately let the side down after wins for Burnley, Sheffield Wednesday and Carlisle.
The Liverpool forward hit a superb equaliser in first half stoppage-time and punished sloppy Chelsea defending to put Jurgen Klopp’s team ahead in the 74th minute. If you saw a few individual performance below a normal level there were not many, a maximum of a couple. Even those ones suffered because they were not able to do more. The team is together’. I have a few players really sad in the dressing room and I’m full of respect for them.
“As professionals they are not getting the respect they deserve”.
“Next press conference I will bring you nice glasses, maybe you see the game in a better way”.
Mourinho was asked about the support from the Chelsea fans, who sang his name often throughout, and took the opportunity to make a veiled criticism of Clattenburg and his officials.
“Nobody knows if they would win with 10 against 11”.
“They made their goal but we stood in the game”. We had our moments, we played football and our build-up with short passes – what we want to do – was very good.
Klopp, who himself endured a hard period at Borussia Dortmund last season only to be backed by the club’s board, admitted he was sympathetic to Mourinho’s plight, and backed him to turn the situation around.
“The quality of the players of Chelsea, we don’t have to talk about this”. But we controlled these situations; not perfectly, we showed the guys a few situations at half-time where we had to protect our situations better.
Arsenal are second, behind City on goal difference, after battering Swansea 3-0, while misfiring Manchester United failed to find the net once again in a 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace.
“In the second half it was an open game, we got a little bit more of the game and made our goals in two ideal moments for us”.
Reports before the Liverpool game had suggested that he could be dismissed in the event of another defeat, but, asked if he was anxious about his losing his job, Mourinho said simply, “no”.
Mourinho, who was subject to the first managerial vote of confidence in Roman Abramovich’s 12-year ownership on October 5, will be wary of what the future holds.
