Mourinho sent to stands as Chelsea falls
Mourinho, meanwhile, had another terrible day as West Ham condemned them to a fifth defeat in 10 league matches.
And Gold was keen to milk the win for all its worth, posting a photograph of Mourinho with West Ham’s mascots.
The much-maligned frontman, who has spent most of his West Ham career on the treatment table, climbed off the bench to score a trademark goal which sealed a 2-1 win over Chelsea at Upton Park.
West Ham’s manager, Slaven Bilic, expressed sympathy for Mourinho – “I feel for him”, said the Croat – but viewed the refereeing decisions that angered Chelsea as understandable.
First, Willian’s free-kick from 20 yards was saved well by Adrian down to his right, before Kurt Zouma’s header from Cesc Fabregas’ corner was cleared from under the bar by Manuel Lanzini and then Adrian, with the Goal Decision System showing the ball was an inch from going fully over the line.

Mourinho may now face a one-game stadium ban, having been handed a suspended ban by the Football Association last week for criticising the referee following his side’s recent 3-1 home defeat by Southampton.
To put into perspective how poor the Blues’ start is, they are now one point worse off than Liverpool were under Roy Hodgson in 2010. It is far easier to replace one coach than it is an entire squad of unruly players and although both coaching staff and squad are guilty, it wouldn’t be a major shock to see a sudden change in attitude when the boss changes as we’ve seen so many times before.
The visitors’ woes were compounded when Mourinho was also sent to the stands for arguing with referee Jonathan Moss at half-time. The stadium ban will come into force if he breaches FA rule E3 – which obliges managers to “act in the best interests of the game” and “not act in any manner which is improper or brings the game into disrepute” – before October 16 next year.
“His quality has never been in doubt, but we’ve just wanted him to get fit, and out of injuries long term”, Bilic said.
On the comparison, Bates said: “I think a lot of people were surprised when Manchester United went from first to seventh in the first season Sir Alex Ferguson wasn’t there”.
