Mourning husband plants stunning field of sunflowers to honour late wife
Don Jaquish, of Eau Claire, tells ABC News his wife Babbette, “was as handsome on the inside as she was on the outside”.
“She was as attractive on the inside as she was on the outside”, Jaquish, 65, told ABC News.
Don planted the flowers – which cover almost 400 acres – along Highway 85 in Wisconsin in June, and after over two months of growing, the flowers finally bloomed, making a truly lovely sight to see.
Before being diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2006, Babbette tended to the couple’s farm in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and did the necessary office work.
After her death, the 65-year-old made a deal with his neighbors to plant his wife’s favorite flower along a more than four mile stretch of country road so that the seeds could be harvested to benefit others struggling with cancer.
She was a pretty modest person and I’m not so sure she’d want her picture on the bag, but she’s such a lovely woman.
“Everyone that ever met Babbette fell in love with her”, Jaquish said. “I was just lucky enough to be the guy that she fell in love with”.
“I couldn’t fathom, until I actually saw it how handsome it is”, says Jenny White, another of Babbette’s daughters.
Babbette Jaquish lost a nine-year battle with cancer in November 2014.
“She realised the importance of research in clinical trials”.
The sunflower project grew and now there are four miles of sunflowers not only on his farm but on those belonging to his neighbours as well.
He continues to hold her words close to his heart. And that’s just like my mom.
Don began planting sunflowers to fulfill Babbette’s longtime goal of selling seeds to raise money for cancer patients.
“I hope that eventually we can find a cure for cancer, so other families don’t have to go through what we have”, Jaquish said.
