Move over ‘Obamacare,’ Trump plan is now the focus

Democrats are opposed to repealing the ACA and instead have tried to convince Republicans to work toward fixing problems associated with the law. They are reportedly discussing a deal to revive the House Republican leadership’s ACA repeal bill – the American Health Care Act. Senate Republicans are even more leery of the radical changes that House conservatives are insisting on. Members of the so-called “Freedom Caucus”, a faction of about 25 conservatives that wanted nothing less than full repeal. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article. The numbers have risen dramatically this year as repeal efforts heated up and people realized their ACA exchange policies and Obamacare were one and the same.

But there is still no proof that Republicans are any closer to repealing Obamacare than they were six weeks ago. They claimed that people were paying too much money for policies that were inadequate, leading people to believe that they had a way to provide better coverage for less money. Unlike under ObamaCare, the plan would not extend the protections to people who were uninsured and trying to enroll in coverage. But McIntosh said he was confident that the waivers under consideration would lower premiums in general and that a separate “risk-sharing” provision favored by GOP leaders would help subsidize premiums for the sick.

Plagued by poor approval ratings, painful economic predictions and vicious party infighting from the GOP’s small but vocal Freedom Caucus, the promise for millions struggling with rising healthcare costs wasn’t kept. The amendment was offered by Gary Palmer (R-Ala.) and David Schweikert (R-Ariz.), members of the Freedom Caucus, and would establish a $15 billion Federal Invisible Risk-Sharing Program from 2018-2026. It’s unclear what will be kept and what won’t this time around.

Under the GOP health bill that’s now in limbo, those taxes would disappear. Republican leaders’ continued talk of bringing some version of their ACA repeal plan to a vote is harmful to individual market consumers. Although Trump said he’d soon release a plan, none appeared.

Walton points out that allowing states to adjust requirements for basic coverage conflicts with the Republicans’ stated intent of increasing competition across state lines. They said they will run ads starting Thursday in the districts of 10 House moderates, but would name only two: Reps. Republican opposition has prevented Obamacare getting similar attention.
