Movie Adaptation of Broadway’s Hit Show Wicked Finally Gets a Release Date
It was announced today that the movie adaptation of the hit Broadway musical will be in theaters in 2019. The studio is giving the potential blockbuster a fitting place at the peak of holiday box office on December 20, 2019.
The only other film in that weekend is an untitled live-action fairy tale film from Disney.
No cast has been set yet, but composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz will be working adaptation with writer Winnie Holzman.
Stephen Daldry (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Billy Elliot, The Hours) will be directing the film, with Marc Platt (Drive, Scott Pilgrim vs the World, Bridge of Spies) producing.
Wicked is basically the Inception of Adaptations. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
The Hamilton of its day, Wicked is now in its 13th year on Broadway, securing its place on the top-10 longest-running shows list.
While we now have a date to look forward to, there’s still no word on who will be taking over Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth’s iconic roles.
After more than a decade of rumors, a film version of the global hit musical Wicked is officially going ahead, according to Deadline.
