Mozilla releases Firefox OS 2.5 with support for add-ons
So, lets say you want to give Firefox OS – the mobile operating system made by the same people who make the browser – a try. Additionally, the company has also released a preview of the OS for developers to experience the OS and use it for creating and testing apps without moving to a Firefox device. You can sort of try the operating system on an Android phone.
To make such changes, go to Settings app on the device, followed by Security, and enable Unknown Sources from the list.
If you’re interested in giving the app a spin, you can download the APK.
There are a number of additions to Firefox OS 2.5. Firefox would now serve as a launcher. Users won’t, however, be able to use the back button because of the fact that Firefox OS only uses a single home button. A few may deem it boring, particularly the Android enthusiasts.
This is reflected by the new tools added to the DE version, which are all meant to make building and debugging websites much easier, supporting the latest additions to Web standards and all the coding best practices. However, it is reported that the feature is now unavailable on the preview version, yet expected to be running once the full version of OS rolls out. Want to do even more with Firefox OS? On the other hand, the user could choose to have Firefox OS’ very own lock-screen as well, although it is deactivated when the OS is installed.
The new developer preview is being offered as an app on Android, and when launched, it will replace the Android home screen and even offer users a set of Mozilla apps.
