Ms. Germany: None of us voted for Ms
Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez is mistakenly crowned Miss Universe 2015 during the 2015 MISS UNIVERSE show at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, California, on December 20, 2015.
Sarah-Lorraine Riek, who represented Germany in the pageant and who did not place among the top spots, spoke to Missosology about the outcome… Realizing that there had been an error, Harvey apologized while Gutierrez was stripped of her crown, which was then presented to the real victor, Miss Phillipines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, all while millions of people watched breathlessly at home. Harvey said she’d be taking her first walk as Miss Universe, but mostly she stood immobile. “At the end of the day, you have to crown the right victor, and that was Philippines, so that means I won!” she says.
Even Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos consoled Gutierrez through Twitter, saying that for Colombians, she will always be their Miss Universe.
After the host (Steve Harvey) returned to announce the correction, the reaction on social media was swift.
Wurtzbach covered her mouth in shock when Harvey announced the correction. I’d like to apologize wholeheartedly to Miss Colombia & Miss Philippines for my huge mistake.
“It was awful. My heart goes out to both girls”.
Harvey’s blunder was reasonable given that he was hired to host the contest “at the last minute”, a source told Radar Online.
Wurtzbach is the third Filipina to be crowned Miss Universe, ending a 42-year drought for the country. “This is what Pia showed in the middle of the confusion and controversy that marked her coronation as the new Miss Universe”.
Steve Harvey only made things worse when he tried to apologise in a tweet.
After her victory was revealed, Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach confessed that she hasn’t reached out to humiliated runner-up Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez since.
“Everything happens for a reason, so I’m happy”, she said.
