MSNBC, DNC reach deal to host Democratic debate in New Hampshire
Sanders has aggressively countered the impression that his nomination would not bode well for Democrats in a general election, pointing out that he performs well in theoretical head-to-head matchups with some Republican presidential candidates.
Sanders is clearly the top dog because just among the Democratic candidates alone, the self-proclaimed socialist-democrat captured 73 percent of the conversation, compared to Clinton’s 25 percent. He brought a sign advocating for congressional term limits, a position many Republicans support and which Sanders has opposed. Ted Cruz, R-Texas speaks at a campaign event at High Point Bulls Oswald Barn in Osceola, Iowa. While it’s true that women tended to support Obama in the last two presidential elections, there are factors beyond gender at work here.
On Sunday morning, I sat in a coffee shop in Cedar Rapids, eating one of Iowa’s famous boxing-glove-sized cinnamon rolls, and scanning the Des Moines Register, which was cover-to-cover rally reviews. Mr Sanders and Mrs Clinton held large rallies in Des Moines on Sunday night. The Florida senator’s campaign said on Thursday it did not anticipate passing Cruz by Monday, and such expectation-setting could pay off if he makes it close, setting up a strong narrative heading into New Hampshire a week later.
The Bernie Sanders campaign said that the Iowa Democratic Party didn’t collect results from 90 Iowa precincts and is asking the campaigns to self-report. Rubio is viewed by many Republicans as a more mainstream alternative to Trump and Cruz, though he’ll need to stay competitive in Iowa in order to maintain his viability.
The net effect of all this outsized fearmongering, combined with the economic and social buffeting the United States has gone through over the last couple of decades, is that the word “socialism” has been denuded of the negative associations that scares the crap out of Fox News viewers.
His comments were echoed by Sanders, underscoring the degree to which voter frustration with the political system has crossed party lines in the 2016 campaign.
“I see a consistency in him that’s rare in most human beings and politicians”, said Koenig, who performed acoustic versions of Vampire Weekend songs “Saturday” and a duet of “This Land Is Your Land” with Sanders on stage. Back then, Clinton was the candidate who insisted that an individual mandate to obtain insurance was key to making an expansion of coverage feasible; Obama’s campaign attacked her for a scheme to “go after people’s wages”.
And some Sanders-supporting women say they considered the draw of caucusing for a woman, but it ultimately couldn’t sway them.
Sanders’ strategy is “not just that I have, gee, this idea for childhood poverty”, Sanders recently told a Bloomberg Politics breakfast briefing here, dismissing Clinton’s earnest incrementalism. “They know we have to take back the Senate”, she continued. She’s gone negative on her advertising to slow down the Sanders surge, even though Sanders has refused to touch on Clinton’s government email server scandal or role in the Benghazi attacks. Her campaign spent almost a year building a get-out-the-vote operation in Iowa yet still seemed to be caught off guard by the enthusiasm surrounding Sanders.
“The numbers we’ve seen since January 1 put our campaign on pace to beat Secretary Clinton’s goal of $50 million in the first quarter of 2016”, said Jeff Weaver, Sanders’ campaign manager. We take care of all facets of web design – visual design, layout design and content development.
Cruz has modeled his campaign after past Iowa winners, visiting all of the state’s 99 counties and courting influential evangelical and conservative leaders. While candidates with that portfolio have often faded later in the primary season, Cruz hopes to ride his momentum to the nomination.
“We’re 28 points ahead”, Trump said in his speech in Iowa, referring to his polling in New Hampshire.
And at least half of the voters in both parties voted for one of those candidates. New terror threats at home and overseas have also ratcheted up national security concerns.
While both parties caucus on the same night, they do so with different rules. On the other side, former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley is the most endangered Democrat. In a tight Democratic contest, it’s even possible for two candidates to split the delegates evenly.
Republicans vote by private ballot.
Presidential candidates offered closing arguments – as well as insults and accusations – as they criss-crossed Iowa in search of crucial last-minute votes the day before voters head to caucuses.
Even without a declared victor, The Associated Press awarded all but one of those delegates. The party reportedly asked the campaigns to self-report totals, which could result in disagreements over precincts that could make up the margin between Sanders and Clinton, according to the Hill.
