MSU’s Bubba Smith named 75th anniversary All-American
Former University of Iowa offensive lineman Calvin Jones has been named to the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) 75th Anniversary All-America Team.
Along with Fitzgerald, Mississippi Valley State’s Jerry Rice was named a first-team receiver, and Oklahoma’s Keith Jackson was named the first-team tight end.
The FWAA’s first All-America team in 1944 included Army’s famous running back tandem of Doc Blanchard and Glenn Davis and Georgia Tech’s Frank Broyles, who later became Arkansas’ legendary head football coach.
I’m also OK with Navy’s Roger Staubach as first-team quarterback, although I personally think Nebraska’s Tommie Frazier deserved second team over Florida’s Tim Tebow. He rushed for 4,303 yards and 43 yards in his Auburn career from 1982-85.
Alabama also holds two other distinctions in relation to the FWAA’s selections: Jones is the most “recent” player to appear on the list, having finished his college career with a third national title in 2013, and Alabama is the only program to produce multiple All-America Team selections at two different positions, offensive line and linebacker. “Please save your hate mail, but feel free to weigh in and tell us how we messed up”. “Let the debating begin”.
Crosby, who came to CU from Georgetown, Texas, in 2003, played four seasons for the Buffs and became the seventh two-time All-American in the program’s history as a senior in 2006.
Nobis won the Outland Trophy in 1965.
The Big Ten led all conferences with 19 selections, followed by the ACC (15), SEC (13), Big 12 (10) and Pac 12 (7).
The Nebraska Cornhuskers are well represented, placing 6 total players across the three teams on Offense, Defense, and Special Teams.
Walker is perhaps the most decorated player in UGA history. The membership includes journalists, broadcasters and publicists, as well as key executives in all areas that involve the game. The FWAA works to govern areas that include game-day operations, major awards and its annual All-America team.
