Muguruza beats Radwanska in 3 sets to reach
“I think when she plays against me, she certainly does take you out of your game”, said Sharapova.
London, United Kingdom: Serena Williams powered into her eighth Wimbledon final as the world number one maintained her 11-year mastery of Maria Sharapova with a 6-2, 6-4 demolition on Thursday.
Williams has, of course, held all four titles at once in the past – clinching the “Serena Slam” by triumphing at the 2003 Australian Open – and would repeat that achievement with victory in her 25th grand slam final.
The 20th-seeded Muguruza became the first Spanish woman in 19 years to reach the title showdown after Agnieszka Radwanska discovered the perils of on-court coaching that led to a botched Hawk-Eye challenge in the last game of her 6-2 3-6 6-3 defeat. It has been 11 years since Sharapova beat Williams, and that looks set to continue for some time yet.
“I’ve won so many slams that I am in a position to not care about winning another Wimbledon”, Serena claimed. But I don’t need another Wimbledon title.
Muguruza is aware that, even if she knows she can beat Williams because she has, Saturday’s task will be tough.
Conchita Martinez was the last Spanish women’s champion in 1994 and the 21-year-old revealed she has been inspired to overcome her dislike of grass by regular chats with her compatriot.
Garbine Muguruza is not fazed by the prospect of facing Serena Williams in the Wimbledon final as she intends to take heart from stunning the world number one at the 2014 French Open.
“I’ve been in this stage [before]”, she said.
“Garbine has been around for a while”, Williams said post-semifinal match. I was so desperate to do it. Fewer than half her serves have been place in play.
To be true, the semifinal was easier than even the quarterfinal match in which Serena Williams had to struggle. “But it was really an experience that helped me say, “OK, Serena, you want to be the best, you’re going to have to do certain things and you’re going to have to improve certain things””. The sort of tennis she is playing this year and for the last many, many years has left no one in doubt that she is unbeatable when she is fit and in the right state of the mind. “She knows I can win against her, that I’m not afraid, and I don’t think she’s used to this”. She doesn’t want to change what clearly has been working. However, it was only previous year that she chose to represent Spain rather than Venezuela in the Fed Cup.
That’s because that match should move quickly, provide good shotmaking and allow them to get on with the show, with the next players on court a pairing to drive the British crowd to an emotional crossroads. “I don’t need any more titles”.
“I have worked all my life for this, I have no words”, said 20th seed Muguruza who will climb into the top 10 for the first time next week as a result of her performance at Wimbledon.
Radwanska glared at her box, Muguruza punched the air in relief and seconds later she was flat on her face celebrating victory. It’s the best. Now I’m feeling that all my effort, all the work that I did before, it’s paying off.
