Mukherjee, Ansari, Modi lead nation in paying tributes to Rajiv Gandhi
Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah administered a pledge of communal harmony to officers and staff at the Raj Bhavan today on the occasion of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s 71st birth anniversary.
Mr Mukherjee, Mr Ansari and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh were among the dignitaries who paid homage to the late leader and attended a prayer meeting at his “samadhi” at Vir Bhumi here. He served the country as its PM from 1984 to 1989. In the following elections, the Congress under Rajiv swept to power winning 424 seats in the Lok Sabha. Moreover, the anti-Sikh riots that began after Indira Gandhi’s assassination led to accusations against some Congress leaders.

The chief minister also remembered the former prime minister for his role in strengthening the Panchayati Raj institutions and granting voting rights to the youth to strengthen the democratic institutions in the country.
