Multiple victims in shooting at California elementary school, authorities say

The gunman was among those who were possibly down, according to a tweet from San Bernardino Police Department Chief Jarrod Burguan.

The shooting happened at approximately 10:30 am local time on Monday morning, according to news reports.

Authorities said one of those killed was a teacher and the other was the suspected shooter who opened fire in a classroom at North Park School.

Burguan added on Twitter that police “are continuing to secure the area” and “believe the threat is down”.

“She knows when to ignore me”, he said with a laugh.

The couple, Syed Rizwan Farook, and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, who authorities said were inspired by Islamic extremism, were killed by police during a shootout. She said she spoke to him, and he was safe.

As word of the shooting spread, panicked parents raced to the school.

She told KTLA the situation is believed to be “contained”. AIR7 HD captured the emotional scene as children were reunited with their parents at Cajon High School.

Medina said she has three children attending schools in the district, none of them at North Park.

At least two students have been airlifted to a hospital.

“Tragedy has again befallen our city”, Police Lt. Mike Madden said Monday of a community that has struggled in recent years. The other student, a 9-year-old, was in stable condition in the hospital.

Video from news helicopters showed lines of young children clapping and giving high-fives as they walked to meet their parents at a nearby high school.

San Bernardino Mayor R. Carey Davis said he was contacted by a White House spokesperson after the shooting.

Parents and guardians were asked to bring their ID to Cajon High School for identification and verification and will be escorted to CSUSB, school officials said.

“Be patient with the delay of students coming out of the school”, Medina said.

All district principals have had lockdown training and know “exactly what to do” if there’s an active shooter report, she said.

San Bernardino is located about an hour’s drive east of Los Angeles. Students were being taken to a local college campus, Garcia said.

Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife Tafsheen Malik, called “homegrown violent extremists” by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, opened fire in a banquet room rented by the San Bernardino public health department, where Farook was an employee.

There were 48 school shootings in the United States in 2016, an average of just under one incident a week, according to statistics compiled by Everytown for Gun Safety.
