Mum shares touching story about daughter’s first Kate Spade purchase
As admirers of celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain and fashion designer Kate Spade ask why following a hard week, a new U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report shows that suicide rates in 49 out of 50 states are on the rise.
On Friday morning, it was announced that world-renowned chef, author, and TV personality Anthony Bourdain took his own life in France. “We don’t think we can just leave this to the mental health system to manage”.
This finding follows a 2017 CDC report that detailed the rise of suicide prevalence in rural USA counties.
According to the CDC report, the number of suicides has increased by more than 30 percent in half of the states in the USA, and more than half of the people who died by suicide didn’t have a known mental health condition. The others include Alzheimer’s disease and drug overdoses.
Anne Shuchat M.D.is principal director at CDC.
The increasing suicide rates are the result of a number of factors.
In the year 2016 alone, 45,000 people died from suicide and Schuchat warned, “Our data show the problem is getting worse”.
“Those amusing cat videos can’t keep someone alive, but they can calm people down to then use other coping strategies”, she says.
Overall, the rate rose to 15.4 per 100,000 in 2014-2016 from 12.3 per 100,000 in 1999-2001.
In an examination of state-level trends in suicide rates that ranged from 1999-2016, researchers from the CDC reported that rates increased by at least 6% in all states but Nevada, which reported a 1% decrease, in that span of time.
The report found that from 1999 to 2016, suicide rates increased in 49 states, with 25 states experiencing increases of more than 30 percent. “It’s also about other methods of suicide, such as hanging, suffocation, poisoning, and the like”. Though it’s not clear why, there are some hints that the economic effects of the Great Recession of 2008 could be partly responsible.
She said she found it interesting in a tragic way that of those who committed suicide without a known mental-health problem, 55 percent died by firearm. KDADS also offers training regarding suicide prevention.
Of those with no diagnosed mental health conditions, men are more likely to commit suicide and do so with firearms.
The CDC recommends five steps to help someone at risk.
Significant jumps in female suicides were seen in 43 states and in male suicides, in 34 states.
She included in her post an extensive list of numbers anyone can call to get help and encouraged them to ‘Please don’t hesitate.
According to CDC data, suicide increased among all sexes, ages, races and ethnic groups.
“You don’t die by suicide as a result of a divorce or bullying or a job loss”.
“We’ve asked the teens [in one of their programs] what their thoughts on the series are”.
“We just don’t talk about that in the United States because there are stigmas against mental health”. Follow up to see how they’re doing.
Prevention efforts are best done when “people can get help solving the underlying drivers of the problems causing them to feel hopeless and despair”, Stuber said.
