Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon moves SC
Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon may not live to receive his second masters degree, in Political Science, which he earned while pursuing studies in the Central Prison here, as he is to be hanged on his birthday, July 30.
Seeking a stay of the execution, Memon sought quashing of the death warrant on the grounds that due procedure was not followed for issuing it. Asked about what type of alert has been issued, Reddy said, “it is only through media reports we learnt about it and there was no such official information (on the matter)”.
Memon’s curative petition was junked by the Supreme Court on July 21 but his death warrant was issued by the TADA court in April this year though the curative plea remained pending.
On Tuesday, Memon had filed mercy petition to Maharashtra Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao.
An Indian man found guilty of financing deadly bombings in Mumbai in 1993 has made a last-ditch appeal to the Supreme Court to suspend his execution.
In his plea, Memon has also claimed that he has been suffering from schizophrenia since 1996.
Meanwhile, President Pranab Mukherjee has additionally rejected his clemency petition, following which he filed a healing petition, which was rejected on Tuesday by the Supreme Court, clearing the best way for his dying sentence. Around 260 people were killed in the serial blast that rocked the business capital of the country.
Though he was not among the persons who carried arms and ammunition used for the blasts, it was Memon who stood behind the perpetrators from the start of the conspiracy till the end, providing finance and logistics for the dastardly crime. Yakub Memon, Chartered Accountant, came back to India in 1994, dissenting his blamelessness.
