Mumbai Journalist Who Wanted To Join IS Arrested By Delhi Police
Authorities in the Indian capital of New Delhi arrested a journalist, who allegedly wanted to join the Islamic State group in Iraq, local media reports said Friday. He approached Iraq embassy where officials found his talks “incoherent” and handed him over to police.
Sources said Zuber Ahmed Khan was taken into custody over a call made to the police control room by the embassy.
The police said Zubair Khan has been unemployed for several years now and has been looking for a job. On Thursday he went to the Iraqi embassy at Vasant Vihar to apply for a visa. Sympathizing with Yakub Memon he said that he is a martyr.
The Mumbai police are tight lipped about the arrest and say that a verification is still on. The police said Zuber had arrived in Delhi on Wednesday and was staying in the Nizamuddin area. Before approaching the Iraqi Embassy, he had also gone to the Press Council of India, asking them for a certificate in journalism for his blog. “As per initial investigation, he does not appear as a serious security threat”, Joint Commissioner of Police, Special Cell, S N Shrivastava told Mirror.
In a separate publish, Khan additionally that he needed to surrender his Indian citizenship and turn out to be a spokesperson for ISIS. “I am fighting for the rights of Muslims using my own money. ISIS does not betray those who help it on the basis of religion”, read one of the blogs. Police was searching for the man ever since the matter was brought to their notice by a Facebook user. Khan holds a masters degree in Mass Communication and Public Administration.
