Munich Police Warn Of Planned Attacks, Evacuate Two Train Stations
Armed German police stay on duty at the main railway station in central Munich, Germany, on December 31, 2015.
The warning came only hours before the city rang in the new year.
Bavaria’s Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann told reporters Friday night at Munich’s police headquarters that authorities had received information that the terror group was behind the threat. “Please avoid crowd gatherings as well as the central train station and the Pasinger train station”, read a translation of the German tweet, according to Reuters.
“They can’t scare me”, said a defiant Jeorg Schuster, who was celebrating with his two teenage daughters and young boy.
It was reported that one train station had been evacuated and trains would no longer stop there.
German police said Thursday that they had “indications that a terror attack” was being planned by Islamists for New Year’s Eve in the southern city of Munich. “Please follow police instructions”.
“Current indications show that a terror attack is being planned in Munich”.
They have not said where they got the information from but called it reliable and said there is a “serious, imminent threat” an attack would be carried out.
Days after the terrorist attacks in Paris on November 13, police in Hannover, Germany, evacuated a soccer stadium before a match between Germany and the Netherlands due to the threat of terroism.
Cities across Europe are already on a heightened state of alert.
In New York on Thursday, police were taking extraordinary measures to ensure security for the traditional New Year’s Eve dropping of the crystal ball in Times Square, where more than a million people were expected.
