Murray and Nadal roll, Raonic outslugs Isner
Third-seeded Spaniard Rafa Nadal, victor of gold in the Olympic men’s doubles, avenged a defeat to Pablo Cuevas in February with a 6-1 7-6 (4) win over the Uruguayan.
Tomas Berdych, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Gael Monfils and Dominic Thiem were other seeds to progress on Wednesday, but it wasn’t all plain sailing for the seeds, with 13th seed Richard Gasquet losing to Kevin Anderson, while 11th seed David Goffin went down to Bernard Tomic.
Second-seeded Swiss Stan Wawrinka overcame 18-year-old American wild card Jared Donaldson 2-6 6-3 6-4 in a match carried over from rainy Tuesday and will next face his doubles partner Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria.
Raonic, from Thornhill, Ont., had 12 aces compared to the 20 that Isner produced.
Borna Coric, 19, of Croatia came back from 2-5 in a climactic decider against Australian Nick Kyrgios by winning five of the last six points to claim the tiebreak 8-6.
“I think I played well”, Nadal said.
On the men’s side, Rio Olympics bronze-medalist Kei Nishikori reached the third round with a 6-3, 6-2 win over qualifier Mikhail Youzhny. Like everyone says, it’s tough, the first match of the tournament.
In women’s second-round play, second-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany beat France’s Kristina Mladenovic 6-0, 7-5; third-seeded Simona Halep of Romania edged Germany’s Annika Beck 6-3, 6-1; and fourth-seeded Garbine Muguruza of Spain topped American Coco Vandeweghe 7-6 (4), 6-2. It took a bit of time to get into it, but I did all right.
“I did two short sessions yesterday and two short sessions today”. US Open finalist Roberta Vinci stopped Tsvetana Pironkova 7-5, 6-3; seventh seed Svetlana Kuznetsova rolled past Alison Riske in a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 comeback. Bencic is still coming back from a wrist injury that forced her to quit a Wimbledon second-round match.
