Murray eyes top ranking after Wimbledon
Britain’s team will be led by Kyle Edmund, who became the new British number two on Monday at 67 in the rankings, and also includes Dan Evans, James Ward, Jamie Murray and Dom Inglot.
With Djokovic’s phenomenal winning streak coming to an end as wells as Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal being well off their peak performance, some believe this victory might herald a reshuffle within the so called “Big Four” tennis stars in which Murray can claim a bigger piece of the tennis pie.
He had lost his most recent three Grand Slam finals, all to Djokovic, including at the Australian Open in January and French Open last month, as well as the Australian Open in 2015.
According to Mark Petchey, if the World No 2 continues to play in the same manner, he would definitely give himself a chance to be World No 1 in the next year.
‘To do it twice here, an event where there is a lot of pressure on me to perform well, I am very proud with how I have handled that over the years’.
But Murray is already focused on a frenetic August that will see him defend his Olympic singles title in Brazil before heading to NY for a tilt at a second US Open victory. And I think my results for the rest of the year showed that – whereas now I feel a lot more motivated throughout the whole year and at all of the events. “I played some really good stuff today”, Murray said. Murray will expect his major rivals to be standing in his way for many years to come.
I think he’s got a great shot. Andy’s playing great and he deserves to win here for a second time. Now obviously I’d like to try to win a fourth but I’ve never put a number on it. If I were to put a number on it, I’d set it high and I’d rather fail by setting the bar high.
Murray, 29, admits that he struggled to build on his 2013 Wimbledon win due to injuries and motivation problems but, reunited with coach Ivan Lendl, he insists he is hungrier than ever for success.
But he knows that after his Wimbledon blip, Djokovic will be desperate to assert his authority. “But Novak is still clearly No 1 in the world right now, he is not just going to sort of go away because he has had one bad tournament”. “You can’t forget what he has done in the last 18 months or so – it has been incredible”. I’ve had some great moments here but also some tough losses the wins feels extra special because of the tough losses, ” Murray said. I’d say it’s looking unlikely but, even if I don’t play, I’m still probably going to go anyway just to be there with the team.
