Murray knocked out of ATP World Tour Finals
Stanislas Wawrinka has beaten Andy Murray in straight sets 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 to advance to the last four of the ATP World Tour Finals in London.
The added complication for Murray is he wants to be in prime shape for next weekend’s Davis Cup final on clay in Belgium and Wawrinka, who was in a similar position past year, feels that could be a factor.
However, Murray was given hope when he managed to break back before securing a vital hold to extend the match, but the Scot could not take two further break points as Wawrinka battled off his challenge to reach the last four. “I will try and go and get a few rest and be ready”.
Rafael Nadal has banned himself from having an end-of-season holiday even if he wins the ATP Tour Finals because he doesn’t believe he deserves a break after a frustrating 2015 campaign.
Nadal is aiming to join Andre Agassi as the only men to win all four Grand Slam titles, a Olympic singles gold medal, the Davis Cup and the Tour Finals.
Murray led 4-2 in the first-set tiebreaker but then lost the next five points and was broken in the first game of the second to put Wawrinka in control. “They’d obviously talked about it. Andy ultimately will know better than anyone that he’s out there alone and he has to get on with it alone, with their support and their love”.
“I played a insane match against Roger in the semi-finals previous year”. Obviously the only positive for me this week is I’ve come away from it injury-free.
“I’m excited to be back for the semi-finals”. The easy volley for Rafa would lead to him taking the first set 6-4. If I look at the match (against Nadal), I think he was a little bit flat.
But Murray said: “I think the way the format is, nearly every game is important”.
“We’ll see. Maybe he’s going to feel more relaxed, no pressure, go for it more, or maybe he’s not going to be completely here”. He is achieving nearly everything that one player can dream.
