Murray makes quick work of Dimitrov on Labor Day
As Andy Murray prepared to served out this most one-sided of victories against Grigor Dimitrov, the rain started to fall on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court.
As John McEnroe observed, “Dimitrov is giving off the vibe out there of, ‘I don’t know what I am doing'”. It was probably the only moment of drama in the whole match, as officials weighed whether to close the new $150 million roof.
With victory, the world No. 2 moved to 25-1.
But Murray, one of the favourites to win his second title in NY and enjoying some of the best form of his career, was the star attraction.
“But I’ve never hit over 140, so I think it was lucky”. Dimitrov changed to a racket with tighter strings and promptly broke serve for the only time to reduce the arrears to 3-1, but the earlier pattern quickly resumed as Murray broke back in the following game. I think it’s something that just really talks about the length of my career, in particular.
The Ukrainian, who arrived in NY on a seven-match losing streak, battled back from 2-4 and 3-5 down in the third set to force a tiebreaker.
After a lacklustre display in his previous round at Flushing Meadows, Murray insisted he would have to improve to overcome an in-form Dimitrov and he certainly kept his promise. I’m excited to play. The end came when he missed a forehand on Murray’s third match point just after the clock had passed the two-hour mark.
“So, yeah, it’s all my fault what happened on the court out there”. The recently returned coach especially keen to see his charge be less tentative with his second serve especially.
Dimitrov is certainly capable of challenging Murray here, and his unorthodox style could upset Murray – in saying that, Murray has one of the best defensive games on the circuit.
Next for the Argentine is a rematch with Stan Wawrinka.
Andy Murray put out a statement with a demolition job of Grigor Dimitrov, while Serena Williams continued to break records on another day of exciting action at the US Open 2016. ‘Able to hit a lot of first serve in. He won 11 of his 12 first-serve points while making just six unforced errors.
It didn’t get much better from there.
Murray and Del Potro could meet again in Glasgow next week after the world No2 was named in Great Britain’s squad for the Davis Cup semi-final against Argentina.
Dimitrov had no idea what to do. No player left in the tournament has served faster here.
Dimitrov, who ended Murray’s title defence at the 2014 Wimbledon and came out on top in their last meeting earlier this season in Miami, represented a potentially tricky opponent for the second-seeded Scot.
