Murray to donate 50 pounds ($78) per ace to help refugees
Birmingham-born Evans, who now plays the Futures circuit and has slumped to No.300 in the world, was originally called into the squad as back-up, but has forced his way past out-of-form James Ward and youngster Kyle Edmund.
Glasgow’s Emirates arena is hosting the tie, which starts today (September 18th) with Andy Murray taking on Thanasi Kokkinakis.
Hewitt and Groth are scheduled to play Jamie Murray and Dom Inglot after British captain Leon Smith opted against naming Andy Murray in the doubles.
Beaten in the US Open fourth round last week, Murray is likely to play all three matches this weekend, including two singles matches either side of the middle doubles rubber.
“It was a great occasion because it was the first time in 63 years that we had reached the final”, Hutchins told Herald Sport.
Australia has won the Davis Cup 29 times, the last time in 2003.
But Evans did beat Tomic in their only previous meeting at the US Open two years ago and will look to seize on any nerves from the Australian No.1 as he too, like Murray, rides the home-crowd support.
“Representing your country is a proud moment, I love it, and I always perform my best when I’m here for my country”.
“But Andy’s a great player and it’s a huge challenge”.
Recalling his win at Flushing Meadows over Tomic, Evans said: “My game matches up pretty well to him, and that’s what I’ve got to try and do on Friday, play that way again”. Both, though, play with non-British partners, so there still remains some flexibility in the selection.
After a controversy-filled period from Wimbledon to the US Open in which he managed to upset, insult or alienate just about everyone from spectators to opponents to the majority of the female population and even good friend and Davis Cup teammate Thanasi Kokkinakis, Kyrgios is lying low. “I’ve had better and I’ve had worse, better than I expected”.
With Murray’s brother Jamie a certainty for the doubles, any points Great Britain collect might all come from Scots and possibly none from an Englishman.
“I am obviously very close to Leon, I spoke to him the last few days and he has done a great job but he would be the first to recognise like me that the Davis Cup over five sets you never know. For sure it’s going to be a tough match and I’ll have to be ready”.
With 37 combined titles in the other half of the draw, the Argentina-Belgium semifinal has the feel of a dark horse run.
Smith said Edmund has recovered from an ankle injury sustained in practice earlier in the week, but did not reveal who will play the second singles tie.
But Murray’s is one of the most generous yet, and he said he was moved by images of the crisis to do his bit to help.
