Murray: ‘Unlikely’ he will play for Britain against Serbia
Instead of charging up the stands to hug his nearest and dearest – as he had done in 2013 when he ended Britain’s 77-year wait for a men’s champion – Murray slumped in his chair and sobbed into a towel just relieved to have ended a 36-month search for a third grand slam title. “I feel happier this time, more content”.
Murray claimed his third grand slam title on Sunday with a straight-sets win over Milos Raonic at the All England Club, the Briton taking advantage of Djokovic’s surprising early exit to go all the way.
The 29-year-old is the first Briton to secure multiple All England Club titles since Fred Perry in the 1930s and only the 12th man to win Wimbledon a couple of times.
“I think after (winning) Wimbledon last time (in 2013), the few months afterwards, motivation was hard”, said Murray. I played really good stuff today. “Hopefully mine is still to come”.
Murray said although he had been playing against the three best players of all time, he is aiming to find ways to establish himself as the sport’s preeminent force. “I put myself in a position all of the time in these events to win them but haven’t won them all of the time”. Novak, the same thing. “I’m very proud with how I’ve handled that over the years”.
Raonic admitted the bitter taste of defeat in his first Grand Slam final would linger for a while after he failed to become the first Canadian to win a major title.
“I’ve had some great moments here and some tough losses”.
The Scot won all three of his matches on clay in Flanders, and contributed to 11 of the 12 points won by Britain across the campaign.
“Ivan’s a leader. That’s important”, Murray said. “Playing at a Wimbledon final is tough and I certainly wouldn’t want to be prime minister, it’s a tough job”, he said before disappearing into the plush corridors of Center Court to be greeted by well-wishers including Prince William and Hollywood actor Benedict Cumberbatch.
‘I think there are a few players going in the right direction and obviously yesterday (Sunday) was a great day’.
