Murray win’s men’s doubles title in Australia
Novak Djokovic admits it’s impossible to ignore the high stakes at play as he sets himself for a fourth Australian Open final showdown with Andy Murray.
Djokovic, who has defeated Murray in all of four of their Australian Open finals matches, leads the British in their FedEx ATP Head2Head matchup by 21-9 and has won 10 of their last 11 outings.
The 13th-seeded Canadian has one of the biggest serves on tour but Murray more than held up his end, if not matching the power of Raonic’s rockets or his tally of aces. Not only did the Murray brothers make the finals in singles and doubles, but fellow Scot Gordon Reid won the men’s wheelchair event on Saturday over Joachim Gerard of Belgium 7-6 (7) 6-4. Match time is scheduled for 3:30 a.m. ET.
Despite a rash of uncharacteristic unforced errors, Williams made Kerber push all the way by breaking back when the German player was serving for the match. No-one has played in more finals of an individual Grand Slam without winning one.
“Andy you should be in bed, I don’t know why you’re here taking photos”.
That is always his challenge when he plays the world No 1. Djokovic has lost only six matches in the past 15 months as he has taken a stranglehold at the top of the rankings.
But how can Murray beat the world number one?
Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares beat Daniel Nestor and Radek Stepanek 2-6 6-4 7-5 to win the Australian Open men’s doubles title.
Raonic was dominant in stretches, and his aggressive serve-and-volley game troubled Murray. He had the match in his control as Murray just couldn’t get a solid read on that serve.
“Probably the most heartbroken I felt on court, but that’s what it is”, the 13th seed told reporters afterwards.
Vandeweghe is the only novice in the group, playing mixed doubles in a Grand Slam for only the second time in her career. He won neither time.
Djokovic wore down Murray in four gruelling sets to win last year’s Melbourne final with the opening two sets lasting two-and-a-half hours.
Murray is a two-time major victor but has had no success at Melbourne.
Murray’s brother, Andy, plays for the men’s singles title on Sunday night against Novak Djokovic. “It was a very close match for three sets”, Murray said.
Defeat would mean an unwanted record for the player as no-one in the modern era has lost five finals at the same tournament. I need to do it, you know, for a very long period if I want to get the win.
The response echoed his previous comments that he wanted to be there “to try and help out, just be there for whatever is really required of me”. But I’ve obviously played very good tennis here.
Meanwhile, Djokovic is coming off a massive encounter with career rival Roger Federer in the semifinal round of the tournament.
“Whether or not you’re able to cope with the pressure in these particular moments, fighting against some of the best players in the world for the major trophy, of course there’s a lot at stake”.
However, Raonic was forced to take a medical time out after three games in the fourth set. Upset at his sliding performance, Raonic lashed out during the fifth set.
