Murrays give GB the edge
Brother Jamie is one of the form doubles players in the world, having got to the final at Wimbledon and, just a week ago, the US Open. It has been giving me a lot of trouble this week. “My results speak for themselves”.
Australia broke at the first opportunity in the third set but Groth missed the chance to put them 5-2 up when he smashed wide after a long rally, and his over-hit lob soon gave Britain a break point which Andy Murray made the most of with an excellent return which Hewitt’s team-mate could not handle.
Murray praised the crowd, saying it had lifted his performance.
“I didn’t feel great the whole weekend to be honest, I’ve been struggling with my back, but I just tried to disguise it”.
“I didn’t help my team very much there but he didn’t make it easy”, a dejected Kokkinakis said.
The Scottish brothers enjoyed vociferous home support in Glasgow but had to come from a set down to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-4.
“It was an incredible match, to come back from the disappointment of losing the fourth set”, Andy Murray, ranked third in the world, told the BBC.
Belgium reached their first title match since 1904 with a tense 3-2 win over Argentina in Brussels with Steve Darcis, the world number 64, needing a fourth match point to defeat Federico Delbonis 6-4, 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7/3). With the Scot serving for the first set, and momentarily discomforted by the ring of a mobile phone (conventional this time, rather than the version of Beethoven’s Fur Elise which punctured the quiet earlier on) a rare Murray backhand dropped into the tramlines and the Australian had managed to restore equilibrium at 5-5.

“I don’t know exactly what happened”.
The world number three’s defensive skills were proving an offensive weapon too, with brilliant scrambling helping him to break for 3-1 in the second set as a bewildered Tomic netted a smash. The next day, he started slowly in his singles rubber against Gilles Simon, and dropped the opening set, but once his legs really got moving, and he found his range and rhythm, he took control of the match; he would win in four sets, completed with a 6-0 “bagel”.
“I remember when I have lost to someone, it is always in your head”, Evans said after the draw at the Emirates Arena. Physically it’s tough but also emotionally, because matches like that are draining as well.
Great Britain will play either Belgium or Argentina in the final, which will take place at the end of November. Murray had won both previous contests against the 22-year-old, but the Davis Cup brings its own unique pressure and he betrayed signs of nerves when failing to serve out the first set.
