My journey has just begun: Serena Williams
Kerber had defeated Williams to win the Australian Open in 2016 and had walked on to her second title at the US Open.
In the second set, Williams started getting louder and seemed to get back to her game.
She was seeded No. 25 in Wimbledon this year after the All England Club amended the rules and ranked her in the tournament, instead of following the ranking list that doesn’t take into account players going on maternity leave.
“We just wanted her to survive-10 months later, she’s in the #Wimbledon final”.
After the trophy presentation and mutual praise for each other from Kerber and Williams, the new Wimbledon champion spoke with ESPN’s Tom Rinaldi. “Our family knows she’ll win many more trophies, too”, he wrote. “I’m literally just getting started so I’ll look forward to it”. That’s something I have to keep reminding myself.
Williams, and her husband Alex Ohanian, were guests at the royal wedding, and she has spoken about the support her friend gives her on the court.
The 36-year-old wrote to all of her followers and supporters, “These past 2 weeks was awesome”.
The left-hander struggled to deal with the added focus previous year, though, when she failed to win a title and slid from number one to 21 in the rankings.
On Saturday, it was Kerber’s ability to blend her trademark defensive skills with aggression that stunned 23-time Grand Slam champion Williams.
“This is one of the best moments of my career”, Kerber told ESPN, saying that it has been her dream since childhood to win Wimbledon.
Angelique Kerber won her first Wimbledon championship by stopping Serena Williams’ bid for a record-equaling 24th Grand Slam title.
“I knew I had to play my best against a champion like Serena – it is always an honour to share a court with her”. Obviously I can compete for the long run in a grand slam. Even more surprisingly, just nine months back, she could barely move.
“I’m just me. That’s all I can be”, Williams said about playing as a mother.
As hard as it might be to accept, she’s still working her way back following childbirth, being mom to 10-month-old Alexis Olympia, and surviving risky post-birth blood clots. She delivered a baby girl past year but had to endure a life-saving surgery. I mean, really. That’s awesome. How many times did we think Serena won the point and Kerber gets that extra ball back in play.
“I’ll be back (and soon too),”(sic) she promised.
