My Life Hasn’t Been ‘Easy,’ My Dad Gave Me ‘Small’ $1M Loan
Real-estate tycoon Donald Trump downplayed his upbringing during town-hall event Monday morning.
“You said that it hasn’t been easy for you, but my dad gave me a million dollar loan”. But he reminded the town hall that he is different.
To most people, a million dollar loan to help get a business off the ground, is a healthy chunk of change.
Trump agreed but said that loan pales in comparison to the size of his real-estate projects. He was referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“I tell you, if I was a woman”, Trump said while waving his hand over his face to simulate wearing a burqa. “And I fought through it”.
His father, Fred, began the family real-estate business in New York in the late 1920s and Trump expanded it in the 1970s.
“It has not been easy for me”, Trump added.
Donald Trump on Monday said his climb to the top of the business world hasn’t been an easy one and depicted a $1 million loan from his father as “small”. “I came into Manhattan, I started buying up properties and I did great”.
Trump promised to get back the four hostages being held in Iran, said a wall separating the United States and Mexico “will be built”, and vowed to do more for military veterans, though he didn’t specify exactly what.
When pushed further he explained he planned to lower taxes and renegotiate trade deals.
“Even my father, he said, ‘You don’t want to go to Manhattan”.
“Do you have a specific plan for how to bring our economy back, or should middle class voters just elect you because your name’s Trump?” the student asked. “I mean, I built one of the great organizations”.
Mark Casey, a registered independent, pressed the candidate on how he would deal with world leaders. “That probably is going to seem pretty easy to a lot of people”.
Trump told Casey that he’d shown restraint throughout the campaign, an assertion bound to raise eyebrows from the political rivals who’ve been subjected to his zingers. He said he knows how to be politically correct when needed.
Casey said afterward that Trump’s answer was just what he was looking to hear.
“I think you’re trying to make me as poor as possible”, Trump told the magazine.
