Taylor Swift ties with R&B star The Weeknd for second place, with seven nominations apiece, while Ed Sheeran and James Bay represent the UK.
Kendrick Lamar not only got more nominations than Taylor Swift, but he beat out Eminem’s previous record for most Grammy nominations in one year.
Swift’s “1989” and Lamar’s “To Pimp a Butterfly” will both vie for Album of the Year along with The Weeknd (“Beauty Behind the Madness”), Alabama Shakes (“Sound & Color”) and Chris Stapleton (“Traveller”).
The Recording Academy continues to spread the love across genres.
WHAT A YEAR! The past twelve months have been memorable to the say the least, especially when it comes to music.
Meanwhile, Rihanna was a shocking omission in this year’s Grammy nominations, after releasing two hit singles, “Bitch Better Have My Money” and “FourFiveSeconds”. Also nominated in the improvised solo category were Scofield, Joshua Redman in his collaboration with the Bad Plus, Christian McBride and saxophonist Donny McCaslin, who appeared on the Maria Schneider Orchestra’s “The Thompson Fields”.
This year’s best country album contenders include Little Big Town’s “Pain Killer”, Kacey Musgraves’ “Pageant Material”, Ashley Monroe’s “The Blade” and “Montevallo” by singer-songwriter Sam Hunt, who is also nominated for best new artist. Additionally, music producer/songwriter Max Martin receives six nominations and mastering engineer Tom Coyne, rapper Drake, and engineers/mixers Serban Ghenea and John Hanes each earn five nominations.

Another artist who caught us off guard was Courtney Barnett in the Best New Artist category. And while we congratulate old favorites Death Cab For Cutie on Kintsugi ” s nomination, it’s hilarious to see Ben Gibbard’s band competing against the likes of Muse and Slipknot in the Best Rock Album category. Billboard editor Joe Levy, talking about the major nominations on CBS, noted that none of Drake’s 2015 releases made the cut in the top categories. The 58th Grammy Awards will air February 15, 2016. And local singer and keyboardist PJ Morton, son of gospel vocalist and preacher Bishop Paul S. Morton of Greater St. Stephen Church, is nominated as a member of Maroon 5 in the best pop duo/group performance category for the song sugar.
