Mysterious death of young woman found inside -150C cryochamber
Chelsea Ake’s body was found by employees inside one of the ice machines at Rejuvenice in Henderson, Nev, according to TV station KSNV.
Rejuvenice, the woman’s employer, is a clinic that uses “whole body cryotherapy” to treat muscle soreness and injuries through brief exposure to extremely cold, dry air. It’s unclear if Ake-Salvacion fatally inhaled a few of the gasses or just did not get out soon enough, but she was in the chamber for at least 10 hours before her body was found – the recommended usage time is three minutes.
Authorities suspect Ms Ake suffocated to death and though unclear on how the situation unfolded have ruled “operator error”.
The controversial machine is meant to briefly expose the body to freezing temperatures of minus 240 degrees Fahrenheit as a means of “medical therapy”.
Officials have told the family of Chelsea Ake-Salvacion, 24, of Las Vegas, that she would have died in seconds.
“We like to do the cryofacial afterward because it helps seal everything in”, Ms Ake-Salvacion had recently told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
In the Journal interview, published on October 22, Ms Ake spoke of her work, which also included cyrofacials, involving chilling the face with liquid nitrogen to reduce pores.
“It’s very frustrating to know because you know there are no cameras in there”.
Bee said Ake, was from Hawaii.
“The only person that does know what happened is Chelsea”.
Bee wants people to remember her friend not by the freak accident but for the “awesome” person she was.
Cryotherapy is used as an alternative to cold-water immersion or ice packs, with claims of weight loss, health benefits, and skin rejuvenation. ‘She was my best friend, and I’m going to miss her dearly’. “Her legacy will definitely move on through us”.
