Mysterious Project Setsuna May Be A Trilogy
Post-release, Square Enix will make the judgement on whether to grow the game into a full franchise or not after it “carefully [looks] over the results” of Project Setsuna’s sales. Among the rather shocking announcements at this year’s E3, Square Enix also announced a new project.
They say that three is a lucky number, and for Square Enix head Yosuke Matsuda it is also the measure of a games success.
Additionally, Matsuda shed some light on the game’s developer, Tokyo RPG Factory, which is made up of external developers, some of which are freelancers.
“It’s important to create new IPs, but creating big IPs is hard”, said Matsuda when asked about making new IPs. This is my own personal view, but I believe that it is very hard to immediately build up a big IP”, Matsuda said “Looking retrospectively at the gaming industry, many games take off or get their big break at their third title. “There are cases where the opposite is true of course”.
He calls it the “law of third titles”.
Meanwhile, Twinfinite reported that “Project Setsuna” may become a trilogy, given Matsuda’s “Law of Third Titles”. If the series has “grown enough” by this point to expect a hit, the scale of the third title is expanded. Still, he insists that at least three games are needed before one can tell whether an IP is successful or not. Ultimately, Matsuda and Square Enix clearly believe that if the third title is successful, then “all is well”. It is still unclear on which platforms the RPG game will be released, including its exact launch date. After a fairly successful first two entries, The Witcher 3 exploded onto the scene in May, and is an early contender for 2015 Game of the Year.
