N.Y. police investigate assault claim against ex-Gov. Spitzer
Former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer is under investigation for an alleged assault at the Plaza Hotel after reports he choked a 25-year-old woman in a hotel.
She was released and returned to Russian Federation as scheduled on Sunday, where she learned about the investigation and sent an email to the former politician seeking to clear his name, Spitzer’s team said. The police are still trying to establish the nature of the incident and who was involved.
New York City Police said detectives are investigating allegations of the assault Saturday night involving Spitzer, the former crusading attorney general who was elected governor in 2006.
Hospital staff contacted police, who spoke to the woman and she told them she was leaving shortly for Moscow and did not want to press charges, the officials said. But we do know that in December 2015, Smith and Spitzer were reported to have split up. ABC 7 reports that that the two “have had a romantic relationship for nearly two years”, and that the “spat”, as they referred to it, began when she broke the news of her imminent departure.
Mr. Spitzer left the hotel but heard from her again a couple of hours later, he said. The injury was not sustained in the altercation, the official said. The woman initially claimed that Spitzer pushed her and put his hands around his neck. She made the allegations after police responded to the hospital.
The New York City Police Department is investigating the incident, which reportedly occurred sometime Saturday night, according to the New York Daily News. Since 2013 he and Silda Spitzer, his wife of 26 years, have lived apart.
Eliot has a history of scandal, and in 2008, the New York Times revealed that he had been using a prostitution service while serving as governor of New York. Investigators found he had spent no public funds on prostitutes, and he faced no charges in the case. In 2013, Spitzer tried to get back into politics by running for New York’s comptroller position, but he ultimately lost the race.
