NASA Wants You to Send Your Name to Mars
“By participating in this opportunity to send your name aboard InSight to the Red Planet, you’re showing that you’re part of that journey and the future of space exploration”.
Calling space fans worldwide: Now is your chance to participate in NASA’shuman “Journey to Mars” initiative and NASA’s next robotic mission to Mars – the InSight lander launching to the Red Planet next spring.
InSight will launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, in March 2016 and land on Mars September 28, 2016.
Mars enthusiast can register their name here.
The adventurous journey of your name will begin on a dime-sized microchip.
But time is of the essence since the deadline to submit your name is soon: September 8, 2015. NASA has sent names to Mars before, not that it should discourage another group of users wanting to send their names to the fourth planet from the Sunday.
Those who sign up can build up “frequent flier” points across NASA’s Mars missions.
In December 2014, 1.38 million names flew to space for the Orion spacecraft’s first uncrewed flight, NASA said.
The Insight Lander will be the first to investigate the deep interior of Mars and will take seismic readings of Martian quakes. The lander will also use a self-hammering heat probe to dig deeper into the red planet’s ground than any previous NASA device.
InSight is designed to peer into Mars’ interior, learning more about the composition of the planet to help researchers on Earth find out more about how the rocky planets of the solar system formed, NASA said.
Users are simply asked to sign up with some of their basic information, before they’re presented with a space-age boarding pass, which inlcudes a frequent flyer number, and additional details such as the date of the scheduled launch, the launch’s location and the arrival site.
