National Basketball Association will credit Kerr for Warriors wins, Luke Walton eligible for awards
As of right now, interim head coach Luke Walton is 0-0 even though the Golden State Warriors are 19-0.
In addition to setting the NBA-record for best start to a season (previously 15-0), the Warriors have won 23-straight regular-season games dating back to the 2014-15 campaign, giving them the third-longest winning streak in National Basketball Association history behind only the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers (33-0) and 2012-13 Miami Heat (27-0). National Basketball Association rules stipulate that Walton’s wins and losses are attributed to Kerr, but Walton is still eligible for honors such as Coach of the Month. Kerr left the team during training camp after suffering complications from offseason back surgery.
So it’s possible (probable) that Walton will win the NBA Coach of the Month award, which will be announced later today. However, any interim head coach or acting head coach is eligible to be recognized with league coaching awards.
“For a while there I’d get the text after every game or if he was still in the building, just a “Thanks for another one” type of text, ” Walton said, per the Bay Area News Group. He short-circuited to interim head coach when Kerr had to take a leave of absence.
Last week, Kerr told ESPN.com that this is all kind of silly. “Luke’s doing all the work with the rest of the staff. I’m not. I don’t even understand it”. Walton has done a great job and will be rewarded as a head coach in the near future. The defending conference champion Cavaliers own a 9-0 record at Quicken Loans Arena, and rank sixth in the National Basketball Association in both scoring (103.1 points) and team defense, limiting opponents to 96.5 points.
