National Football League admits officials erred in final seconds of Ravens’ loss to Jaguars
“We have 188 yards (passing) and that’s not what we’re capable of doing”. Jacksonville stacked the box and essentially dared Baltimore quarterback Joe Flacco to throw the ball.
Marks made his first start of the season in the game against the Jets last week.
Flacco’s 10-yard touchdown pass to tight end Crockett Gilmore made it 7-7 with 11:32 in the second quarter. Baltimore has won six consecutive home meetings with Jacksonville, which is looking to end its 13-game road losing streak. Mike finished up the offense by giving the offensive line a grade of C+ saying “this group was put in an awkward position because the Ravens threw so much in the first half”.
Jacksonville Jaguars running back T.J. Yeldon, right, rushes past… Then he twisted Bortles’ head around by the facemask. It was the kind of game that Bortles will probably want to forget. Jacksonville got an extra untimed down, and Jason Myers connected on a winning field goal.
Entering the field in the redzone, Flacco ran 16 yards to set up Baltimore on a first-and-goal.
Flacco completed 34 of 45 pass attempts for 316 yards and a 98.0 passer rating. The Ravens haven’t come up with a takeaway in their past five games.
“I saw zeros on the clock so I started jumping up and down”, cornerback Jimmy Smith said.
That play was officiated correctly, as it appeared the one that ended the Ravens’ hopes was. That set the Jaguars up with a 53-yard field goal attempt and no time on the clock.
Vikings 30, Raiders 14 – Adrian Peterson ran for 203 yards and a TD, Cordarrelle Patterson returned a kick 93 yards for a score, and visiting Minnesota took over sole possession of first place in the NFC North with its fifth straight win. It was the first interception of the year for a Jaguars defensive back and set up the offense in the redzone.
History repeated itself just moments later, as House once again picked off Flacco.
It was the third time this season the Jaguars have enjoyed a late break.
It will be important for Bortles to come out strong Thursday to try to recover from Sunday’s subpar performance, but considering the Titans’ recent play, the Jaguars may be able to skate by should he struggle. In the victory over Buffalo, the Bills had four turnovers and the Jaguars had one. Most statistical areas are poor, and the turnover ratio is -7. Jeremy Ross gave Jacksonville the ball deep in Ravens territory following a muffed punt. The Ravens’ biggest weakness comes in the secondary and the Jaguars are getting great production of its sophomore duo of receivers, Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns. This was an effective strategy because the Ravens do not have any wide receivers that would strike fear into most defenses. The Ravens were celebrating. The Ravens needed just two plays to capitalize. Instead, the play was allowed to continue, and an Elvis Dumervil personal foul moved the Jaguars into range for the game-winning field goal.
But Dumervil grabbed the quarterback’s facemask, and because a game can’t end on a penalty by the defense, the Jaguars got one more play and the ball at the 35. He redeemed himself after missing a chip-shot earlier in the game. Safety James Sample (shoulder) was ruled out prior to the contest. Running back Bernard Pierce suffered an Achilles injury during warmups and did not play on Sunday.
