National Football League could play global games outside UK
A matchup for the first game in Mexico City hasn’t yet been announced, but it is expected to include the Pittsburgh Steelers, who are close to finalizing a deal to play a game in Mexico, according to AS.com.
The National Football League will continue to host regular season games outside of America for the next decade, with nations other than England to benefit from the agreement.
Two more games are set for Wembley this season and more worldwide games are on the horizon after the expansion of a 2011 resolution that permitted the league to schedule games in the United Kingdom through to 2016.
“This marks an important step in our long-term worldwide growth”, said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in a statement.
Mexico, where one regular-season game was played in 2005 and drew a record attendance of 103,467, is a front-runner for next year. “Mexico we are hugely excited about, always have been, at least since 2005”. Seen as a burden to fans here in the United States – last week’s game between the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets started at 6:00 a.m. PST – it has drawn widespread appeal in Europe.
Dallas Cowboys COO Stephen Jones said, per Don Banks of Sports Illustrated, Dallas is interested in playing a game in Mexico, but their biggest issue is losing a home game.
Owners approved a resolution at the NFL meetings Wednesday that extends the league’s ability to play global regular-season games through 2025 – including outside the United Kingdom, where it has held a dozen games at London’s Wembley Stadium since 2007. “We’re really focusing on the logistical and operational side”.
“You could realistically look at taking that nearly anywhere in the world where it’s appealing”, Waller said. We don’t need to prove as much on the fan-demand side.
“Rio would be great. It’s a very different animal”.
