National Football League media is still talking about Tony Romo and the Chiefs
The good news for both teams is that the new NFL league year begins on Thursday and that’s when the Cowboys can finally release Romo.
Owner Jerry Jones says Dallas can afford to keep Romo as insurance to Dak Prescott, but there’s a hefty premium to pay.
Tony Romo remains a member of the Cowboys, but it looks like the team is already preparing for the post-Romo era.
As was reported a couple of weeks ago, there is a mutual interest between the Dallas Cowboys and veteran quarterback Josh McCown.
If I was King of the World, I’d decree that Romo head to the Houston Texans. Why?
This came in the context of dismissing a report that had Romo winding up with NFC East rival Washington as part of a three-team deal.
So does this move make sense?
Rapoport notes that Romo doesn’t have a bonus in his contract which would require the Cowboys to make a decision by a certain date.
“We’re open to anything”, said Elway told Archer.
But right now, let’s guess Romo does land in Denver. Denver is not the only team expected to pursue Romo, though. Jones is willing to wait it out as long as possible because the only thing he’s concerned with is getting the most for Romo in return. Trevor Siemian was respectable in his first season as a starting quarterback, but Denver’s offensive struggles were pretty apparent. Also, there isn’t many receivers he can throw to who can catch the ball. You try to discuss everything and every possibility; what might be available and what might not be available, talk about that and see how it affects us. If the Broncos do end up signing Romo, hopefully it will lead to many exclamation points for Broncos fans. Romo is fourth on the active list of National Football League career quarterback rankings, behind only Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and Russell Wilson.
Enter the Denver Broncos, who floundered last season after failing to secure a capable replacement for Peyton Manning following his retirement. Coming off of an injury-plagued 2016 season in which he landed on IR with a back injury, he only played in a career-low 10 games accumulating 15 total tackles and four sacks. So Denver would be taking a gamble that he can step on the field, remain healthy, and contribute to them making a run at the championship. Perhaps it is because he is garnering a lot of interest in free agency.
