National Football League notebook: Panthers LB Davis undergoes surgery

Rivera, who won a Super Bowl ring with the 1985 Chicago Bears as a linebacker, said he’ll rely on his former coach Mike Ditka, among others, for advice leading up the February 7 Super Bowl against the AFC champion Denver Broncos.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Carolina coach Ron Rivera remembers turning to Dave Gettleman following a training camp practice this summer, and asking the Panthers general manager, “Am I seeing what I think I’m seeing?” “We’re excited about that possibility”. He has faced an ACL tear almost three times before and came back strong. “I’m going to try and take from my experience of having been there as a player, and I will try and share some of that with some of our players once we get into the week”. “But I also trust the Panthers team physicians and medical staff who will clear him only if they feel confident in his prognosis”. So I have no doubt that as long as everything continues to heal the way its supposed to, hell be out there. Players were not made available for comment on Monday. I never seen nobody who was that size who looks like a typical National Football League quarterback who can sit in the pocket and then you can run… you probably play any position in the National Football League that wanted.
“It was painful”, Davis told the Associated Press after the team improved its record to an NFL-best 17-1 this season. Rivera wants to make sure that his players don’t get into their own heads, thinking they aren’t doing enough.
The Panthers linebacker was forced to leave the field with a right-arm injury in the side’s 49-15 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.
The 32-year old watched the second half of Carolina’s win over Arizona on the sidelines, with his arm in a sling.
“I’m not missing the Super Bowl”, Davis said after the game. The Panthers next game will not be for nearly two weeks, which will give Davis a chance, at least a small one.
That promise seemed closer to a reality late Sunday night when Davis’ wife shared a photo of him preparing to go into surgery. It hasnt stopped him before.
Safety Roman Harper also left the game with an eye injury. Kalil returned in the second half to finish the game.
